One man was hospitalized on Thursday after being shot several times by a San Diego police officer in Pacific Beach, officials said.
The incident started inside the Pacific Beach Taylor Branch Library near Dawes Street and Thomas Avenue at around 4 p.m. Investigators say police were called to the library for a disturbance complaint after a man was seen with a "weapon" inside the library.

A library patron, who wished only to be identified as Cisco, was inside at the time.
"He walked by some people and didn't swing. He was just a little deranged," Cisco said.

The witness says that while the man wasn't threatening people, he was trashing the computer section of the library.
"He was hitting tables and went over rambling on," Cisco said. "He said he was an Indian chief, was in the army, and was a general."

Staffers called police, and by the time officers arrived, the man was outside the facility with a hatchet in his hands at the corner of Dawes Street and Thomas Avenue.
Lt. Juan Marquez with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, which is agency investigating the shooting, says two or three responding officers repeatedly asked the man to drop the weapon. When he didn't, one officer fired several shots. Marquez didn't say exactly how many shots were fired.
By the time neighbors came out of their homes, a man identified only as in his 50s, was lying on the sidewalk with a hatchet next to him.
The man was scooped up by responding paramedics and taken to a hospital. He is expected to survive his injuries.
No officers were injured.
At least a half-dozen police cars and a PD motorcycle were on the street, surrounded by crime tape. Video from SkyRanger 7 showed an officer inside the tape, standing near a hatchet on the sidewalk.

The intersection of Dawes Street and Thomas Avenue was cordoned off for hours as detectives continued their investigation.
SDSO's Homicide Unit has been called out as part of a county memorandum of understanding created in order to investigate shootings involving law enforcement.
